This year is the 30th anniversary of Family Matters. That’s right folks! We’ve been at this thing for three decades now! We have met so many wonderful people, partnered with some great ministries like Focus on the Family and Family Life, and God has used our efforts to touch the lives of countless families with the message of His grace. Praise the Lord!! One of the ways we would like to celebrate what God has done in us and through us is to highlight one resource a month as a way to familiarize you with what Family Matters has to offer in order to minister to you better.

This month’s resource highlight is In Praise of Plan B by Dr. Tim Kimmel © 2010

From the dustcover:

“If you travel far enough in life, you’re sure to run into some detours. Detours that sidetrack the smooth-running dreams you always envisioned and leave you someplace you never intended to be.

If you’re not careful, you can easily grow disillusioned or disappointed at the loss of Plan A. But best-selling author Tim Kimmel, who declares himself, “the patron saint of Plan B,” is here to help you turn Plan B into Plan Best!

In Praise of Plan B offers memorable, often humorous gems from Kimmel’s own experiences as well as others’. The people you’ll meet in these pages have all encountered life’s various roadblocks, yet they still found a way to soar above it all. You can too!

Here you will find touching, inspirational wisdom for every facet of life, showing you that the Plan B you were forced to settle for will ultimately yield a richer, more rewarding life than Plan A ever could have.”

We think you will love this collection of vignettes as much as we do. The book is arranged as a compilation of short stories. They can be used as part of devotionals and bible study groups, are a great family dinner time read and make great gifts! It’s so important to talk with our kids about how our “Plan A” is often different from God’s plan for our lives. What may seem like a detour from our plan is often God steering us in His direction, rather than our own.

God has shown me more in my Plan Bs. I didn’t get the job I thought I wanted and ended finding my true path through the process. I was also able to meet wonderful friends I never would have met & a sense of peace in my trust in Him.

  2. Robyn says:

God has recently shown us proof that His plan is always the better one. We were devasted last spring when what we thought was the best plan fell through. We grumbled a bit and felt sorry for ourselves. Almost lost hope. Took some real soul searching to suck it up and move on. Then at the end of September God answered our prayers and found us a beautiful home priced under our budget allowance. We have been realizing how blessed we are as there were at least two others that had said they were close to purchasing this house also. God is good!

  3. Ali says:

At the end of 2008 my husband lost his job effective Jan 1, 2009. I was pregnant with our second child and this was just the beginning of the craziness of the horrible economy. I work in real estate development and my company lost a key contract and began a series of 5 layoffs over the next 1.5 years. I was scared but my husband had faith, he was so calm about his days of job looking that I wanted to wring his neck thinking what are you doing we might have 2 kids and NO JOBS! His mother put us on a prayer list at her church and told him it really was in God’s hands and that he had a plan for us. He managed to get a job 7 months later right before I had my son in August. We felt that God had really answered our prayers and were touched. After many years of discussing church and trying to pick the “right one” we decided to start looking and found one in October 2008. We are now active members within our new church family(my husband is a deacon), it was like they were waiting for us when we walked in with open arms. Not only did Plan B bring us to God and our church family it brought my husband a job where he is appreciated and after 2 years of hard work he finally got the promotion he has been working towards for years.

  4. Tanya S. says:

Plan B began the day I became a mother. My plan was to return to work, but God’s plan for our family was to have mom at home with the kids. This has changed my life in a thousand ways. It is sometimes hard financially, yet God always provides what we need…sometimes in ways we could never imagine. My husband and remain committed to this plan nearly 11 years later. We willingly sacrifice vacations, new cars, etc for us to follow His plan for us. We are now homeschooling (another plan B!) our three young children. I am sure there will be more plan B’s for us in the future.

  5. Eden says:

My husband and I are both medical doctors . A year after our internship ,we decided to pursue our residency training in the premier private hospital in our place because we thought it was the best training ground and offers right connection after training. An out of town applicant instead got his desired post and my husband was devastated about this. With the turn of events, we opted to apply in a government training hospital– our plan B that turned out to be Plan Best…The private hospital’s residency training was stopped because it failed to comply the number of cases the Board required and our hospital became the only training hospital in our place. We remembered Romans 8:28,that says ” all things work together for Good to those who love God and to those who are Callled according to His Purpose.. His plan is always the Best….

I just received a Plan B and would love to read this book. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  7. Nanette says:

I LOVE that God is All about the Plan Bs in life!! We have experienced His grace in big and small ways as He works in our lives through this principle!! Several years ago we experienced a devastating season with our oldest daughters who were teenagers at the time. What seemed to be our worst nigthmare, introduced us to a world of need that we had never seen. Through this temporary tragedy, we found Peace, Forgiveness, and Hope – we experienced God’s Grace in Abundant ways; and as a result, our focus changed, wisdom was gained, and doors of opportunity were opened for us to step into Full-Time Ministry = God’s Plan Best!

  9. Kris Taranec says:

Second chances are real and they make life worth living.

Much like a storybook, our lives have a beginning, middle and an end. Some are long essays and others are condensed into short novels. The chapters of our lives are a result of the choices we make and interactions with others along the way.

The storybook of my life is a fairy tale in progress, but not without it’s share of ogres. I married my high school love; we had beautiful son. Eleven years later, divorce… How would I manage alone?

The next chapters spanned years, filled with the trials of raising a son as a single parent, caregiving for my aging mother at home with hospice care, and learning to cope with the pain and hopelessness of depression through counseling. When Empty Nest Syndrome arrived, loneliness filled my heart.

Then, life offered me a second chance. After 16 years apart, two events reunited me with my high school love. First, we celebrated the joyous occasion of our son’s marriage. Second, our precious granddaughter was born. What an incredible feeling it was to reconnect and find we were both very much in love! Encouraged by family, we remarried on our original wedding date.

Yes, indeed. Second chances make life worth living. My high school love and I are now sharing many more happy chapters together in this fairy tale that is our life.

  10. Gail Roberts says:

The first plan “b” that comes to my mind is being blessed with our second daughter. Not planned but me, but surely planned by the MAKER!

  11. Kerri S says:

I’m still struggling to find the acceptance, but God turned my Plan B into Plan Best when we lost our first child, a baby girl, and quickly became pregnant with twin boys! All 3 are blessings and we definitely planned on 2 kids, but not necessarily this way!

  13. Lori Funk says:

    Very interested in this book!
A time when Plan B turned into Plan Best for me was when God took infertility and turned it into 3 beautiful adoptions making our family situation Plan Best instead of just Plan B! We are so thankful He opened the doors we walked through and gifted us 3 wonderful children! One at a time, full of rollercoasters as we journeyed through the adoption process, but that is what has made us who we are today and wouldn’t change it for anything!

  14. joe says:

Right now i am in plan bestin order fir God to work on me and my hubvand. not where we thought we would be.

  15. Renee says:

God is currently showing me what my families Plan B is. Ironically if I had more closely followed God’s direction for my heart, spirit and my life, Plan B would probably have been Plan A. I have always had faith and love for God, but am realizing I thought I could handle the day to day issues and needed Him more for emergencies only. So silly! My husband revealed some significant childhood pain to me 1 year ago and the struggles he kept to himself because of that. In doing so are also working on the sacredness of our marriage and family as there was significant pain for all of us. Thank you for the work you are doing to help families wherever they are at in their journey. I personally am excited about my family’s opportunity to explore our Plan B!
